November 2019 Print

Message from the President

Hello North Piedmont Chapter and welcome to November!  October was a busy month for our chapter, packed with the golf outing and a sustainability event in addition to our monthly meeting.

Lead by Jim Fields, chapter and student member volunteers from A&T joined with Southside Baptist Church and went out into the community to make winter warmer and more cost effective for a handful of local families.  We applied weather stripping, insulation, and water heater blankets.  Leaky windows were sealed up, and energy efficient light bulbs were also installed.  Making a few simple and inexpensive changes, we hope will have a significant impact on energy costs for years to come.

Distinguished Lecturer, Pam Duffy, joined us at A&T University for our joint meeting with the student chapter, and we had a great turnout.  It was standing room only in Cherry Hall as we promoted HVAC and the world-changing importance of work done by engineers and professionals in our industry.  Leading into the discussion, many folks shared their experience with ASHRAE and the difference it has made to their careers, I believe, making a lasting impression on a great bunch of future professionals.

Finally, the golf outing was a smashing success with beautiful fall weather and plenty of low scores.  When the dust settled, we had raised $3,700 for ASHRAE Research!  Congrats to our overall winners, David Lee, Michael Hendrick, Clayton Gadd, and Aaron Hughes!

Chapter Technology Transfer and Programs

Hello everyone.  We have two great events lined up to close out the 2019 calendar year for the North Piedmont Chapter.  We hope you’ll mark your calendars to join us.  On Wednesday, November 13, we have our very own ASHRAE Presidential Member, Tom Phoenix who will be presenting a new DL topic “Achieving Zero Energy in K-12 Schools”. The event will be held from 11:30 am to 1 pm in the conference center at Hoffman & Hoffman.

Also, please make plans to come out in support of ASHRAE Research Promotion as we celebrate the holidays with our annual Christmas Party and RP Auction.  We hope to duplicate the great success we had at a unique venue, the aquarium at the Greensboro Science Center!  If you missed out last year, don’t miss it again!

Research Promotion

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Fall Golf Outing at Bryan Park in support of ASHRAE RP.  It was an absolute perfect day for golf, $3,700 was raised for RP, and the only thing lower than the scores was, shockingly, our bar tab.  Congrats to all the flight and prize winners on the day!

I hope you all have December 5th circled on your calendar for the 2019 North Piedmont Christmas Party and RP Auction.  Hosted at the Greensboro Science Center Aquarium, the event is sure to be a good time.  We’ll have a great slate of auction items for your bidding pleasure, so come ready to gain some ground on your Christmas shopping!  This is, perennially, our single biggest source of fund raising for the year, none of which would be possible without your support.

Finally, thank you to all our sponsors who not only help us reach our RP goal year after year, but make our chapter operations possible.  Thank you!!

I want to personally thank everyone who gave a hand with increasing Membership Promotion for the chapter this month. Aside from helping out just the chapter we are ultimately striving towards being a great help to humanity.

I encourage everyone to be on the lookout this month as we plan to host our first Membership Promotion event of the year! The only secret I can let out for now is to come with your A game....

Student Activities

Thank you to Pam Duffy for her presentation "Promoting the HVAC Industry for a Sustainable Future" at North Carolina A&T for student emphasis month.  There was an outstanding student turnout.

While North Piedmont meetings will not be located on A&T's campus again until next October, students are welcomed and encouraged to attend.  There is no cost to attend, but you must register on the ASHRAE North Piedmont website.  When you get to the payment options, just select bypass payment.

As a reminder, the deadline for scholarships is December 1st!  Please contact Mark Bingham ([email protected]) or Joseph O'Keeffe ([email protected]) ASAP if you have any questions.
